ABOUT

Hi, I’m Mieke, a Sunshine Coast–based muralist and contemporary artist with a love for transforming spaces into places that inspire connection. For me, art is more than a visual outcome. It’s about creating moments that invite people to pause, feel, and connect with their surroundings.

Over the past 30 years, I’ve painted murals across Queensland, Australia, and internationally, working on projects for homes, schools, festivals, businesses, and councils. My murals range from vibrant storytelling walls filled with local flora and fauna to bold, large-scale works that reshape how we experience architecture. I use a mix of hand painting, spray painting, and airbrushing to bring energy, movement, and atmosphere to each project.

Alongside murals, my contemporary art practice explores sculpture, installation, drawing, and performance. I often use recycled and simple materials, such as wood, thread, paper, and processes of repetition to create sensory, textural experiences. These works reflect my fascination with light, sound, and space, and encourage people to slow down, notice details, and connect more deeply with the world around them.

Collaboration is at the heart of what I do. I take pride in listening to clients and communities, translating their vision into unique, meaningful artworks. Whether I’m painting a mural that becomes a neighbourhood landmark or creating an installation that sparks reflection, my aim is always to leave a sense of care, beauty, and belonging in the spaces I work in.

When I’m not painting or building, you’ll find me in the surf, paddleboarding with my daughters, or hiking the wild tracks of the Sunshine Coast. These landscapes fuel my creativity and remind me why I do what I do: to share the joy, colour, and connection that art can bring to everyday life.

BIO + CV

Sunshine Coast–based artist and place-maker Mieke van den Berg creates site-responsive installations, sculptures, murals, and performances that explore how people connect with spaces and with each other. Her process-driven practice experiments with recycled and everyday materials, including wood, paper, and textiles, combined with light, sound, airflow, and architectural intervention. The resulting works transform the familiar into immersive sensory experiences that invite presence, mindfulness, and community engagement.

With more than thirty years of experience painting large-scale murals across Australia and internationally, van den Berg has extended her practice beyond walls to encompass conceptual installations and drawings. Her works often incorporate accumulative, repetitive processes using domestic materials and textiles, drawing attention to invisible labour and the cultural value of craft. Through this approach, she highlights overlooked narratives, subverts hierarchies within art, and reconsiders the intersections of gender, domesticity, and public space.

Van den Berg holds an Honours in Fine Art from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Queensland and internationally, and she has participated in artist residencies in both Australia and the UK. Recognition of her practice includes the Local Artist Award, Sculpture on the Edge (2023), the Excellence Award, Local Artist – Local Content Prize (2020), and selection as a finalist in the Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize. Her public artworks can be found across Queensland, including Bokarina, Buderim, Caloundra, and Mooloolaba, where her murals have become visual landmarks for local communities.
