Flow
Conceptual Abstract Mural – A Story in Motion

Not all murals are figurative. Some are conceptual, expressed through rhythm, form, and flow rather than imagery. This custom residential mural was created as a deeply personal collaboration, translating one family’s story into an abstract visual language. Inspired by a geometric architectural mural in a hotel room, the client was drawn to the power of form to convey meaning without being literal.

Through conversation and shared exploration, we developed a narrative expressed through movement. The mural begins with two independent flows, representing their first meeting while he was travelling, surrounded by the ocean and water activities. The rhythm of water became the underlying metaphor. As life unfolded, circumstances required a temporary separation. In the mural, this moment is expressed as diverging currents, subtle shifts in spacing and direction. Eventually, the streams reunite, stronger and more intentional, symbolising the joining of their lives. From that union, two smaller wave-like flows emerge, representing the arrival of their son and daughter. These streams then merge into one unified movement, flowing forward together into the future.

The entire composition consists of matte-black dots on an eggshell-white background. Minimal in colour yet rich in meaning, the mural demonstrates how abstraction can hold powerful narrative depth. This project is a reminder that murals don’t always need figures or literal symbolism. Sometimes a story is best expressed through flow, rhythm, and intentional form.
