Below the Surface

Below the Surface is a public art mural commissioned by the Sunshine Coast Council to celebrate Bokarina’s unique coastal environment and community life. The artwork explores the connection between place, meaning, and nature from the perspective of a sea turtle in its habitat. While Bokarina’s beaches are a hub for surfing, snorkelling, and family activities, they are also critical nesting grounds for turtles. The mural encourages respectful coexistence, depicting humans engaging in low-impact recreation while highlighting the natural rhythms of the ocean.

Flowing water forms and layered, vibrant colours echo the movement of the tides and the glimmering reflections of Sunshine Coast sunsets. Surfers, snorkelers, and the turtle share the same space, reinforcing environmental awareness, community engagement, and a sense of shared responsibility. The design creates a warm, welcoming, and energising atmosphere, activating the space and promoting learning and appreciation of local marine ecosystems. It demonstrates how public art can educate, beautify, and strengthen community identity, leaving a lasting impact on locals and visitors.
