Surrealist Illusion Mural

Created for a private patio, this large-scale illusion mural transforms an existing rock wall into an expansive, surreal landscape. The composition extends the physical space into an imagined distance, dissolving architectural boundaries and inviting the viewer into a layered world of mystery and discovery.

A structural post in front of the wall was visually “painted away,” seamlessly integrated into the scene so it disappears into the environment. The mural unfolds as a visual treasure hunt, filled with symbolic and playful references chosen in collaboration with the client.

Hidden throughout the landscape are octopus tree roots, a ballerina tree, a tribute to Salvador Dalí, the Tin Man, a dragon, a floating island, Caesar’s foot, Beatrix Potter’s Tailor Mouse, a gorilla, Easter Island figures, a subtle Mickey Mouse reference, elephants and giraffes, and cascading waterfalls. A whale swims freely beyond the confines of a glass fish tank, fish drift through clouds, dice rest among distant forms, and unexpected details, fingers, feet, umbrellas, flamingos, mountains and lush plants, emerge upon closer inspection.

The mural balances illusion and narrative, encouraging prolonged looking and repeated discovery. It transforms the patio into a contemplative and whimsical environment where personal memory, art history, and imagination intertwine.

“I love art. And I hate ugly fences. I could see this fence from every angle in my living area and the backdrop of my outdoor space. I didn't want a painted ugly fence I wanted a fantastic, inspirational and unique piece of art. I found Mieke because she had done some amazing mural work on buildings around the area. She visited the space, viewed my other art, checked the various viewing perspectives and asked about my ideas and visions. My brief was 1. Cover ugly fence. 2. Fantastic art that I would never get bored looking at. 3. Durable in partly outdoors situation. 4. With a sense of fun and irony.

I have commissioned art pieces before and understand that there is no control of the finished piece. It comes from the imagination and intuition of the artist combined with skills in interpretation and physical skills in creating art.

Mieke suggested painting the mural onto two pieces of custom cut and shaped outdoor board to fit the space and screwing it into place. That covered the whole fence and gave me the chance to go slightly higher. Mieke unveiled the pieces and I was blown away by the creativity and detail in the work. It was more than i could ever have imagined. Mieke installed the mural and painted the same detail onto the post in front of it so it blended seamlessly into the work.

I can't speak too highly of her passion, dedication and skill in taking a difficult space and some vague ideas and turning them onto a masterpiece.

PS how many hidden ironic details can you see in the photos? There is a whale, a mouse, an elephant, a couple of hidden flamingos, a female form, a gorilla and lots of other hidden details.”
