Connectivity Mural Program – Nambour State College

This project was delivered as both facilitator and muralist, working with two Grade 4 classes at Nambour Primary School. Titled Connectivity, the program centred on belonging, strengthening students’ connections to art, to each other, to their school, and to the wider community.

The concept was developed collaboratively around the school’s mascot, Woorey the water dragon, a species native to the local area. Through research into the land’s history, the school grounds, and the surrounding environment, students explored what connection to place truly means. Woorey became a unifying symbol of identity, resilience, and shared responsibility.

The mural's visual language draws on the water dragon's scales, translated into interlocking forms inspired by the shapes and colours of the school desks. Each form is slightly different yet flexible, designed to fit together and move as one, reflecting the students themselves. Individual yet connected.
Distinct yet part of a larger whole. Students were immersed in every stage of the process: concept development, research, site preparation, transferring the design, painting, sealing, and participating in the final reveal. The program emphasised collaboration, resilience, and problem-solving, reinforcing that the creative process, not just the finished mural, holds lasting value.

The completed mural stands as a vibrant expression of student voice and local identity. More importantly, it fosters pride, ownership, and a deepened sense of belonging that extends beyond the artwork itself.
